Great Ocean Road

Yesterday after leaving Mount Gambier, we drove an hour to take The Great Ocean Road to Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road is something we have wanted to do even before we knew we were moving go Australia. It's kilometers of pure coast line, site seeing and tourist attractions. Since grace and I both love the ocean, this is something we would never pass up.

We were so excited about The Great Ocean Road, that we nearly drove through half of it yesterday. We hit literally every scenic outlook. We absolutely loved the Bay of Islands, the Grotto, the Thunder Cave and 12 Apostles. We also took a little detour to Logan Beach were there is a large whale lookout. We didn't get to see any whales, but the beach was amazing. We also took "the path less traveled" and found a cave that we enjoyed climbing in. Everything that we saw was incredibly breathtaking.

We were so busy having fun yesterday, that we didn't think of a sleeping accommodation. Now moms, we know your hearts just stopped beating for a second. However, being the smart, sensible women that we are.. We managed. We were driving around at 8pm realizing everything was closed. Hungry, tired and almost on E.. We stayed calm and weighed out our options. We stopped at a pub in Lavers Hill. They told us they had one motel room left but were no longer serving food and all gas stations were closed. We looked around at the people surrounding us, thinking of the dark town we just drove through and realized if we stayed, this could be a "Wolf Creek" ending. After politely declining the room, we b-lined it to the nearest city, Colac 40 minutes away. Blaring Zac Brown Band and singing to stay awake and sane, we finally made it to Colac. We got to the gas station 5 minutes before closing, went to the McDonalds drive thu, and googled a caravan park. We were a bit worried about the caravan park since we were entering it in the dark (unable to see our surroundings) and the office was closed so we just pulled in. We threw all of our luggage in the back seat and set up our double swag in the bed of our ute. For those reading in America, a swag is an extra large sleeping bag kind of with a mattress, blankets and pillows in it... Quite comfortable. After spooning Grace all night, we woke up to a beautiful sunrise over Colac Lake. Literally, we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. Absolutely majestic. The park even had hot showers to get us ready for the day. Happy girls. To top that even though... When we drove out we stopped at the office to pay. I walked in, saw the cutest old man sitting at the desk and I kindly said "I'm so sorry sir, we owe you money for staying here. We arrived late last night and the office was closed so we just stayed. We were so tired, I'm sorry". He looked out at our ute, smiled and said "absolutely no worries. Did you use any power?" I chuckled and said no, and explained how we slept in the back of the ute. He wore a warm smile and told us to not worry about the cost, he was just glad we chose somewhere safe to stay. We tried to give him money and he refused. Genuinely such a sweet man. Great Ocean Road, here we come again!

View from our swag... Not to shabby!
